Brian Hunter

1931 - 2010

It is with great sadness that the Association has to advise our members of the tragic loss we have experienced this week. Past Patron and G.C.D.G.A. member for many years Mr Brian Hunter passed away Thursday 11th February 2010.

Brian was 78 years of age and was fully involved in Club and District Golf for over 60 years. Being a member of Southport Golf Club since 1949 Brian moved through the ranks and became Club Captain 1977 & 1978 and featured in the Club Pennant teams for many years. He also was a member of Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club for a large portion of his golfing career.

Brian has been a life member of Southport G.C. for the past 10 years which indicates the many years of devoted service he gave to Southport culminating with him being rewarded with Life Membership.

Brian became involved with the G.C.D.G.A. some 30 years ago being a delegate for Southport G.C. before taking a position on the committee. The Association bestowed Life Membership on Brian in 1990 in appreciation of his long service to District Golf. So as you can see Brian Hunter allowed golf to become a major part of his life and helped lay the foundations for a successful Southport Golf Club and made sure that Golf on the Gold Coast was heading in the right direction for over 11,000 Club Members to enjoy current Districts Events - Pennant - Championships - Interdistrict and State Competitions.

To Brian's family - the Association wish to extend to you our deepest sympathy for your great loss. I know we will miss him at our future meetings.

JUNIOR PENNANT

The 2010 Junior Pennant Competition concluded with Emerald Lakes winning the Pennant for the second time - Congratulations.

The team played well right through the competition and deserved to finish on top. Burleigh G.C. managed to defeat Surfers Paradise in the final match to become runners up for 2010.

Congratulations to all clubs for a very good contest with excellent golf being played each week. Thank you for to players and team managers for a terrific series.

JUNIOR INTERCLUB Pennant Series continues for another 3 three weeks before the winner is declared - a close finish is expected.

DIVISION 1 & 2 PENNANT

The first Round of our Premier Pennant competition for 2010 begins on Sunday 21st February at Surfers Paradise Golf Club. Once again we expect a bumper of a series with most clubs believing they can win the Pennant.

Goodluck all players - be competitive but don't forget to have fun.

MARQUEES

G.C.D.G.A. proudly have 4 marquees available for club use. Marquees were purchased by a grant from Qld Treasury and Gambling. Please contact Barry Neill on 0421 630 180 for enquiries.

2009 PATRON INVITATIONAL DAY

Once again 13 Golf Club representatives and guests attended Patron Percy Roberts Golf Day at Southport G.C. on Sunday 15th Nov 2009. A great day was had by all with very stiff competition being experienced from most teams. Some teams whom we won't name from Helensvale struggled the wind and rain for a very well constructed 34 points. All other teams played in brilliant sunny & dry conditions and scores were most improved. Of course visiting Clubs could not compete with the local pair of Phil Ratcliffe [Pres] and Norm Thomson who won the Patrons Trophy for Southport with a score of 46 points and two violent protests on grounds of home course rubbish having to be dismissed.

They were declared the winners - and so they should. The pair won four lovely rounds of golf at Lakelands for their effort - Well Done ! Congratulations!

Second place getters were the Coolangatta & Tweed Heads boys Ross Mead [Pres] & Darren Tonkin [Capt] with 44 points - [4 games of golf at Robina Woods/The Colonial] for their effort.

Third Club was Arundel Hills whose reps were Russell Beasley & Kerry Magro with a score of 43 c/b.

The Association would like to thank all Clubs who were kind enough to donate prizes of games of golf at their courses for this special day.

Lakelands Golf Club

Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club

Emerald Lakes

Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club

We thank you for making this day so successful for patron Percy.

Just a mention to Clubs who could not find 2 people out of their full memberships...... who would have been thrilled to the teeth to be asked to represent their Club on a special day like the Patrons Day. It is most disappointing to all concerned to only have half of our Clubs in the Association who take the time to make the effort to be part of this day.

If your club was not part of this years Patron Day then make arrangements now to be sure you will be part of it in 2010. It truly is a fantastic day.

SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Senior Championship was won by Len Korns, Coolangatta Tweed with a great score of 76. Len is a very consistant golfer in the Senior ranks being a member of the winning Coolangatta Tweed Senior Pennant Team over the past few years.

Ray Croxford of Southport won the Seniors Nett event with 71. Ray of course has been an icon in district and Southport Golf Club for many years and it is great to see him still going strong.
